AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - Alert for the spread of the zika virus among pregnant women

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - Following the declaration of the local Ministry of Health of the state of alert in 47 municipalities of 11 departments in the Country due to the presence of the vector that transmits the zika virus, the same as dengue and chikungunya, 63 pregnant women have been infected. In particular zika affects women and, if pregnant, may have implications for the health of the baby. Nationwide, the local Ministry of Health has already registered 3,836 suspected cases. Cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) are also increasing, with 46 people infected and affected by symptoms of muscle weakness in the upper limbs of the body and as a consequence could also have respiratory complications.
