AFRICA/NIGERIA - Appointment of the Rector of the "St. Albert the Great" Seminary in Abeokuta

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 16 October 2015 Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, appointed Rev. Anselm Izuade Ekhelar of the diocesan clergy of Auchi as Rector of the "St. Albert the Great" Seminary in Abeokuta.
The newly-elected Rector was born on February 15, 1965 in Ogbona, Edo state, Nigeria. He was ordained a priest on September 9, 1989 in Benin City. After the Minor Seminary (St. Paul's Seminary, Benin City) he continued his studies at Ss. Peter and Paul Major Seminary in Ibadan and then in Rome at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, where he obtained a Doctorate in philosophy (1997-1999).
During his formative years he held several positions in academia, including co-founder and first president of the Theology Students Association of Bodija. After his ordination he was assistant pastor and pastor, chaplain of the novitiate of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Dean, president of the Nigerian Priest and Religious Association. During the summer period he carried out the pastoral ministry in Scotland and New York. He is the author of several publications, since 2000 he was part of the team of formators at the All Saints Catholic Major Seminary of which he was Vice-rector since 2011.
