AFRICA/GABON - Appointment of the Bishop of Port-Gentil

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 12 January 2016 the Holy Father appointed Rev. Euzébius Chinekezy Ogbonna Managwu, Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Libreville as Bishop of the Diocese of Port-Gentil (Gabon).
The newly-elected Bishop was born on December 13, 1959 in N'Djamena, in Chad. As a child he emigrated with his family to Gabon, where he got to know the Gabonese culture. He went to Catholic schools in Libreville and for some time went to the local state University. He then studied at the Saint Jean Minor Seminary in Libreville and from 1985 to 1992 he went to the Card. Émile biayenda Major Seminary in Brazzaville. He was ordained a priest on 1 November 1992 and incardinated in the Archdiocese of Libreville.
Since his ordination he has served the following pastoral and academic roles: 1992-1993: Assistant priest of Notre Dame des Victoires, in Libreville; 1993-1996: Pastor of Saint Pierre, in Libreville; 1996-1997: Spiritual Director of the Saint Jean Minor Seminary in Libreville; 1997-1998: Rector of the Saint Jean Minor Seminary in Libreville; 1994-1998: Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Libreville; 1998-2001: Licentiate in spiritual Theology at the Teresianum in Rome; 2001-2002: Formation at the Foyer de Charité, in Chateau Neuf de Gallaume (France); 2002-2003: parish priest of Saint André, in Libreville; 2003-2006: Pastor of the Cathedral in Libreville; 2006-2010: parish priest of Notre Dame des Apôtres, on the outskirts of Libreville, and Dean of south Libreville.
Since 2010 he has been the parish priest of Notre Dame de l'Ogooué, in Lambaréné, and Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Libreville.
The Diocese of Port-Gentil, erected in 2003, is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Libreville. It has an area of 22,850 square kilometers and a population of 128,000 inhabitants, including 71,770 Catholics. There are 8 parishes, 7 diocesan priests and 4 religious, 11 religious women and 13 major seminarians. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 12/01/2016)
