AFRICA/DR CONGO - The Bishops announce a Monitoring Committee to relaunch the electoral process

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) today announced that they have established a Monitoring Committee to follow political developments in the Country in a year characterized by a busy electoral calendar and a situation defined "very worrying" by them.
The announcement comes at the end of the meetings held by a special delegation of CENCO (Conférence Episcopal de la Rép. Démocratique du Congo) as part of the national consultations promised by President Joseph Kabila in view of the election deadline. Thanking the Head of State for the attention given to the Bishops, and representatives of political parties and civil society who participated in the consultations, His Exc. Mgr. Nicolas Djomo, Bishop of Tshumbe and President of CENCO, pointed out: "Despite the differences of their respective positions, an expression of democratic freedom, each component, for the sake of our motherland, holds open a window that favors exchanges for the supreme interest of the nation".
In this delicate phase, CENCO has decided to create a "monitoring committee" formed by the six Metropolitan Archbishops of the Church in the DRC (the Archbishops of Bukavu; Kananaga; Kinshasa; Kisangani; Lubumbashi; Mbandaka-Bikoro) plus the President and the Vice President of CENCO. "The task of the Committee - said the statement sent to Agenzia Fides - is to maintain contact with all the protagonists, to inspire and to boost mutual trust and to encourage initiatives to relaunch the electoral process".
