Comodoro (Agenzia Fides) - More than ten thousand people attended the march yesterday morning in the city of Comodoro which was convened by the Trade Union of the oil industry to draw attention on the situation of workers, their families and small and medium-sized local enterprises. The march was attended mostly by workers and their families, and also by some authorities. Fides source learns that an such a large-scale march had never occurred and even the Bishop described the presence of many citizens as a gesture of solidarity.
The march lasted two hours, and ended in front of the Cathedral, where the Secretary-General of the Trade Union of Petroleum, Jorge Avila, handed over to the Bishop of the Diocese of Comodoro Rivadavia a report on the situation, asking His Exc. Mgr. Lahoz Gimeno to intercede in order to maintain social peace, which has lasted for more than two years.
The Bishop has pledged to promote dialogue among different sectors: "I ask you to be supportive of each other, and to build a better city of Comodoro" he said, noting that "the Church is a meeting place for dialogue and where to seek an answer as soon as possible". The same report handed to the Bishop is also in the hands of all the rulers, and was delivered to both the Minister of Energy, Juan Jose Aranguren, and to president Mauricio Macri.
The Union, which represents all workers in the industry, ask not to stop the activities of the oil industry by cutting thousands of jobs. In Comodoro alone 3,000 workers are at risk, which means 3,000 families.
As part of the national energy policy, the central government intends to reduce the oil business in the area. More than a political representative of the region recognized that energy policy in the area has ensured social peace and a normal production, stopping the effects of international crisis in this region.
