Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops' Conference of Haiti (CEH) has informed that it has decided to participate in the establishment of the Commission of electoral evaluation (see Fides 23/12/2015). In the statement sent to Fides, signed by Cardinal Chibly Langlois, Bishop of Les Cayes and President of the CEH, it is explained that the Bishops' Conference chose Mgr. Patrick Aris as its representative in this body, and that it reached this decision after listening carefully to the concerns of those involved.
Mgr. Aris is Secretary of Communications and spokesman of the Episcopal Conference.
This decision, the statement said, implicates that all the prerequisites set by the CEH for a proper and peaceful conduct of the consultation will be taken into account by all actors involved in the electoral process. For this reason, the CEH believes that a Commission in which there are credible representatives of different social sectors, with a clear mandate, can bring clarity in respect of the truth, set the rules in the electoral process and correct what needs to be corrected.
The ballot is scheduled for December 27. The ballot is between Jovenel Moise, supported by the outgoing President and the majority party, and Jude Celestin. The current President of Haiti, Michel Martelly, in his Christmas message called the Haitian people to show the world that the country is capable of maintaining unity and carrying out a democratic consultation in a popular manner.
