AFRICA/SENEGAL - Caritas Dakar launches a program to fight poverty and illegal migration

Dakar (Agenzia Fides) - On December 8, His Exc. Mgr. Benjamin Ndiaye, Archbishop of Dakar, will launch the project promoted by Caritas Dakar to tackle poverty and the illegal migration of young people in the suburbs of Pikine. According to a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, the ceremony of the launch of the initiative will be held at the local town hall, in the presence of the administrative authorities, religious women and local traditional leaders.
The project, which will last for two years, is funded by the diocese of Rottenburg Stuttgart in Germany for a total sum of 145 273 000 CFA francs and produced in collaboration with the National Secretariat of Caritas Senegal. The aim is to reduce poverty and the phenomenon of the illegal emigration of young people, by improving the economic and social situation of vulnerable families in four areas of Thiaroye, department of Pikine, and the empowerment of young people on the dangers of illegal emigration and its consequences on the national economy.
100 families will benefit from the food distribution, while 100 female-headed households will receive funding and training to start a business. The Caritas Dakar program will involve over 194,000 people. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 04/12/2015)
