ASIA/VIETNAM - Resignation of the Bishop of Kontum and appointment of successor

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 7 October 2015, the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Kontum (Vietnam), presented by His Exc. Mgr. Michael Hoàng Duc Oanh, in accordance with canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law. The Holy Father appointed Rev. Luy Gonzaga Nguyen Hung Vi, pastor of Phương Nghĩa (Kontum) as Bishop of the Diocese of Kontum (Vietnam).
The new Bishop was born on August 18, 1952 in Ha Noi. From 1963 to 1968, he received priestly formation in the minor Seminary of the diocese of Kontum and, then, from 1969 to 1973, he attended the minor Seminary in Đà Lat. From 1973 to 1977 he was a student at the Pontifical College of St. Pius X in Đà Lat. Subsequently, from 1977 to 1990, he served in the parish of Binh Cang in the diocese of Nha Trang, waiting to get government permission for his ordination. He was ordained a priest on April 7, 1990 in Nha Trang, and incardinated in the diocese of Kontum. Since ordination he has served the following pastoral and academic roles positions: 1990-1993: assistant priest in Bình Cang, Nha Trang; 1993-2006: Director of the Minor Seminary of Kontum in Hochiminh City; 2006-2008: Studies at the Institut Catholique de Paris, France, where he obtained his Licentiate in Liturgy; 2008-2009: Secretary of the episcopal office in Kontum. Since 2009 he has been the parish priest of Phương Nghĩa, Kontum.
The Diocese of Kontum (1960), suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hue, covers an area of 25,240 sq km. It has 1,775,200 inhabitants, including 300,649 Catholics, distributed in 88 parishes, 169 priests (119 diocesan and 50 Religious), 15 Brothers and 462 Religious Sisters. There are 79 seminarians.
