Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - "Parliament met to confirm what the government has already announced, namely the rejection of the African Union Mission in Burundi. It is therefore only a formal coverage to a decision already taken", local sources from Bujumbura told Agenzia Fides, where the Parliament met in special session to decide whether to accept the African Mission of Prevention and Protection in Burundi (MAPROBU) that the Peace Council of the African Union decided to send to end the violence that has bloodied the Country since April.
"We think that the African mission will still be sent, because a small Country like Burundi cannot defy the African Union alone.
The latter, after taking a similar commitment, cannot back out", say our sources. The Burundian crisis arose as a result of the candidature in April, of President Pierre Nkurunziza for a third presidential term in violation of the Constitution and the Arusha Peace Accords. Since there has been violence in the Country, also due to the presence of armed groups and rebels, report Fides sources, "every day one sees the bodies of opponents killed in the streets". (L.M.)
