AFRICA/TANZANIA - Start negotiations to overcome the crisis after the cancellation of the vote in Zanzibar

Tuesday, 10 November 2015 elections

Dar es Salaam (Agenzia Fides) - Negotiations are being held to overcome the political crisis due to the annulment of the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections in the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar, decided by the Independent Electoral Commission of Tanzania for "serious irregularities" detected during the count on Sunday, 25 October (see Fides 29/10/2015).
Yesterday, November 9, closed-door talks were held between the President of Zanzibar, Ali Mohammed Shein, and the opposition leader, Seif Shariff Hamad, in the presence of two former Presidents of Zanzibar. We still do not know the results of the meeting, but some local observers consider the presence of the two former Presidents of the archipelago at the meeting a positive fact.
Meanwhile, on November 5, John Magufuli, of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party in power (CCM), who had been elected President of Tanzania with 58,46% of the votes, took an oath in Dar es Salaam in the presence of several Heads of African States and religious national leaders, including Cardinal Polycarp Pengo, Archbishop of Dar es Salaam.
Following the post-election tensions, on 30 October the Episcopal Conference of Tanzania had launched an appeal to political leaders to "accept the results of the presidential election recently concluded that were announced on October 29 by the Electoral Commission, as a sign of political maturity" and all Tanzanians to be vigilant and to keep peace", because violence and stubbornness are not useful for the development of the Country".
