Niamey (Agenzia Fides) - Thousands of displaced Nigerian families, fleeing the violence of the Boko Haram jihadist sect have been welcomed in Niger and receive assistance from Caritas Niger in the region of Diffa in southeastern Niger. According to a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, in the next three months, Caritas will provide food and other aid to Nigerian families and to those of the host communities of Goudoumaria, Maine Soroa and Diffa.
"This emergency aid of Caritas Développement Niger aims to strengthen the resilience of the displaced persons from Nigeria and the populations of the welcoming villages who live in a situation of extreme vulnerability", the statement said. Some of the aid will be given in the form of money to spend in local markets for the purchase of food and other basic necessities. It hopes to give a contribution to the local economy, badly hit by the crisis caused by Boko Haram (see Fides 06/06/2015) with its raids in the territory of the Niger which started in February 2014. Caritas Développement Niger has been present in the region since the beginning of the crisis and can count on the help and solidarity of Caritas Internationalis network which has allowed the mobilization of many national Caritas.
