Washington (Agenzia Fides) - "We are called to be messengers of hope and prophetic voices against senseless violence, a violence that can never be justified by invoking the name of God": is the statement of Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the United States of America, who makes an explicit appeal to non-violence after the recent bloody events that occurred in San Bernardino and in Colorado.
"The politics of fear and inflammatory rhetoric only offer fertile ground for extremism and pave the way for division, a future of fear", said the Archbishop in the note sent to Fides. Therefore, before the problem of refugees, he stresses that "the Catholic Bishops Conference of the United States must remain steadfast in its commitment towards refugees, who often escape severe persecution".
Therefore the text of the statement concludes: "We defend people who face religious discrimination, including our Muslim brothers and sisters. Let us try to face the extremist threat with courage and compassion, recognizing that Christianity, Islam, Judaism and many other religions are united in opposition to the violence carried out in their name".
