Asunción (Agenzia Fides) - The waters of the Paraguay River are exceeding the maximum level of 7 meters in height towards the capital Asunción, forcing about 37,000 people to flee their homes. According to the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), the most affected villages are the poorest in the capital, where about a quarter of the city population (513,000 inhabitants) lives. Among the victims, about 21,000 evacuees following the increase of the water that was recorded last week, while the others are those who after the 2014 floods are still living in shelters provided by the local government. SEN continues to help and assist people every day trying to accommodate them in 50 shelters in different locations across the Paraguayan capital, some of whom are housed in the barracks of the Army.
The Government does not exclude the fact that the river will continue to increase and that in the coming days the displaced may increase. The current growth is due to heavy rains caused by the El Niño phenomenon. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 14/12/2015)
