Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The ambassador of Ecuador in Lima, Jorge Sandoval, informed that Peru and Ecuador are completing the negotiation of a new statute to regularize the situation of immigrants in both countries, within the "Gabinete binacional", the committee made up of parliamentarians from both countries called to vote on certain issues.
With this new statute, said the ambassador to the Peruvian press, immigrant citizens in both countries will be able to regularize their position, both those with expired visa and those who entered illegally; it also provides for the exemption from fines, on the basis of a common legislation.
Sandoval considers these developments important, from Ecuador’s point of view, which has always promoted the free movement of goods and capital, neglecting, however, human beings. In addition, the new statute will contribute to the realization of the concept of "South American citizenry" beyond the individual countries. The ambassador of Ecuador also stressed that the "Gabinete binacional" appears as "an unprecedented mechanism, considering that we have been separated in recent history".
