EUROPE/SWITZERLAND - ILO: New Protocol for the abolition of all forms of slavery

Geneva (Agenzia Fides) - The eradication of all forms of slavery, such as human trafficking, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict, was the focus of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, just celebrated. Over 60 million people forced to flee their country and millions more who cross borders in search of better living conditions, are likely to fall victims of trafficking and remain slaves. On this occasion, the ILO adopted a new legally binding Protocol, with the aim to strengthen the global strategies for the abolition of forced labor, and is expected to come into force in November 2016. In addition, with the campaign 50 for Freedom ILO aims to get at least 50 countries to pass the protocol by 2018. The newly-updated ILO convention takes new forms of slavery into account. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides an opportunity to fundamentally change the conditions that fuel poverty, injustice and gender discrimination. With the approval of the Agenda, all world leaders will commit themselves to strengthening prosperity, peace and freedom for all. International authorities have stated that they wish to avail themselves of Agenda 2030 as a guide to put an end to the root causes of slavery.
