Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - The Episcopal Conference has called on the Haitian Provisional Electoral Council to clarify "what really happened" during the presidential elections on 25 October, whose results confirmed that Jovenel Moise and Jude Celestin will continue a second turn.
In a statement released yesterday, November 30, the Bishops' Conference states that "Justice and Peace", with 1,236 observers deployed in the ten departments of the country for the elections, found "blatant fraud" during the election process on 25 October.
The final results of the vote were confirmed last week: Jovenel Moise (representative of the current government) and Jude Celestin (opposition) will go to the ballot on December 27 to choose the next president of Haiti between the two.
The Bishops' note, sent to Fides, highlights that the Provisional Electoral Council should be impartial and should avoid repeating the same mistakes next 27 December, and therefore asks for "more transparency", especially in the vote count. Finally, the note calls for "solidarity and communion" with the people in such a critical and decisive moment. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 01/12/2015)
