Suva (Agenzia Fides) - The Fiji islands are going through a difficult period because of the hydrological risk that affects 67,000 people, or 13% of the population in the Country. The production of sugar cane has declined by 25% since the start of the drought. The tropical cyclone Pam has battered the entire Republic of Vanuatu, destroying water tanks and decimating crops across the Country. The emergency teams estimate that more than 90,000 people need food and water, especially in hard-hit regions, such as North Tanna which has already suffered a serious food shortage. According to local officials from OCHA (United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs), rain fell heavily for over two months affecting the Countries of the South Pacific and there is growing concern on the urgent humanitarian aid for next year.
