Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of the diocese of Santiago de los Caballeros, His Exc. Mgr. Freddy Antonio de Jesús Bretón Martínez, is contrary to the construction of a wall at the border to prevent the illegal entry of Haitians in the Dominican Republic. "The ideal thing would be to remove the shame and restore the proper functioning of the institutions in this country", he emphasized in the statement sent to Fides.
Mgr. Bretón Martínez, speaking yesterday to a local television station "Comunicacion y Vida", promoted by the archdiocese, also reported that in recent weeks the settlement of illegal Haitians in the municipality of San José de las Matas, province of Santiago has increased. He also added: "If a wall is built, this will be useless, because the same military will make holes to ask tolls".
Mgr. Bretón reiterated that the Dominican authorities must be custodians of the territory, and if they have to expel illegal Haitians, they must do it, bearing in mind that they have to respect their dignity and without stealing the goods they carry with them: "They cannot be robbed of everything and then left on the street with nothing".
