Città del Guatemala (Agenzia Fides) – Guatemala yesterday, Sunday 25 October, had a second round of presidential elections. According to the local media Jimmy Morales won, although the official announcement has yet to be made. Representative of the Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación), Morales defeated by a long way the other candidate Sandra Torres of the National Unity of Hope: reportedly he gained 95. 7% of the votes.
A career as comedian and a chartered accountant Morales, age 46, also studied theology. Like his rival, Sandra Torres, he has promised to fight the corruption from which the country suffers. An evil which the people have publicly denounced in recent months, particularly following the resignation of former Otto Pérez Molina, still being investigated (see Fides 1/6/2015; 5/6/2015; 5/9/2015).
