AFRICA/TANZANIA - Appeal from Christian leaders: "No to ethnic or religious manipulations before the vote"

Tuesday, 6 October 2015 elections

Dar es Salaam (Agenzia Fides) - "Beware of politicians who aim at dividing the population on the basis of a religious or ethnic group in order to obtain electoral advantage". This is the joint appeal launched by the Episcopal Conference of Tanzania and Christians Council of Tanzania (CCT), in view of the general elections of 25 October, sent to Fides.
"Do not let anyone treat you as a commodity, to buy you to breach peace" urged the Christian leaders, noting that, despite the different political visions, the people of Tanzania must remember to be part of a single nation and a single Country.
"Those who make peace in this nation are the same Tanzanians, and to safeguard peace for its prosperity and future generations should be their priority", concludes the appeal.
Tanzania is considered one of the most stable Countries in Africa, with a growth rate of 7% per annum. Despite this, most of its inhabitants live below the poverty line. The unequal distribution of resources is causing discontent among the population. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 06/10/2015)
