Kathmandu (Agenzia Fides) - Nepalese Hindu extremist groups have warned foreign Christian missionaries to leave the country. And the attacks against two churches, which occurred in recent weeks, "are a worrying sign", note local sources of Fides. Although Nepal has recently approved a new Constitution that confirms the secular state, the "Morcha Nepal" Hindu extremist group has distributed leaflets which threaten Christians, asking them to leave the country.
Radical groups had proposed an amendment to the Charter, rejected by Parliament, which called to proclaim again Nepal a "Hindu state".
"Foreign influence have manipulated government decisions" and "Christians have corrupted the country", said the leaflet in circulation.
Fides sources report that "Christians continue their mission of dialogue and proclamation of the Gospel of charity towards all". Also groups such as "Christian Solidarity Worldwide" (CSW) note that the new Constitution includes a clause that makes "any act to convert another person from one religion to another" illegal.
This approach which, according to the associations for the protection of human rights violates religious freedom as it affects the freedom of individual conscience, was considered a concession to radical groups that promote "anti-conversion laws", denouncing the alleged proselytizing of Christians.
