AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - Mgr. Escobar Alas denounces: "The new tax will in particular hit low-income families"

Monday, 21 September 2015

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of San Salvador, His Exc. Mgr. José Luis Escobar Alas, expressed the hope yesterday that the Legislative Assembly will discuss the "special contribution" bill for safety and public cohabitation in depth.
This measure sees a 10% increase regarding communication bills, which relate to the possession of mobile phones and televisions, for all users, to be allocated for this purpose.
According to the note sent to Fides, for Mgr. Escobar the proposal primarily affects low-income families and will be a great obstacle to their access to the telephone service and television. "I think that the proposal, made by the Ministry of Finance, did not take into consideration this group of users. I am not against taxes, but they must be fair, this is not the way to bring the country forward and be transparent; this should be paid by people who who have more income", the Archbishop said in his usual press conference on Sunday. "I am sure that the State needs funds to address the problem of violence, but the point is that you have to discuss what type of tax is more suitable for society", he highlighted.
Mgr. Escobar noted: "Everywhere in the world the opposite happens, prices fall as technology progresses and the number of users increases, while here we go backward". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 21/09/2015)
