EUROPE/BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA - Ten years after Dayton Peace Agreement: Caritas Bosnia Herzegovina backed by Caritas Europe organises Meeting on Social Situation

Friday, 7 October 2005

Sarajevo (Fides Service) - Although the Dayton Peace Agreement signed on 20 December 1995 left certain matters unsettled it did put an end to the most bloody war in Europe since 1945. Ten years on Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Muslims and Jews will attend a Meeting in Sarajevo on 11 October to consolidate dialogue and discuss the present social situation in the country still struggling with poverty and economic hardship.
The Meeting is organised by Caritas Bosnia Herzegovina with the support of Caritas Europe and will be attended by representatives of various national Caritas bodies including a delegation Caritas Italy led by director Vittorio Nozza. The meeting will be an opportunity for Caritas bodies which have worked in Bosnia Herzegovina to build a common vision of the country’s future and confirm their commitment in the Balkan region.
The meeting will start at 9am with a re-visitation of the Agreement by the then prime minister of Slovenia Alojz Peterle, now a member of the European Parliament. This will be followed by a panel discussion at the end of which representatives of the four religious aid agencies Caritas, Merhamet, Dobrotvor and La Benevolencija will sign a joint commitment to eliminate and prevent poverty (S.L.)
