AMERICA/URUGUAY - “The challenge of Ecumenism in Latin America”: intensive course in Ecumenism 21-23 October in Montevideo

Montevideo (Fides Service) - “The challenge of Ecumenism in Latin America: ecumenical activity problems and prospects ” is the title of a three day intensive course in Ecumenism 21-23 October in Montevideo organised by the Commission for Ecumenical and Interreligious Dialogue of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Uruguay in collaboration with its diocesan counterpart. The course, given by Fr Juan Carlos Urrea Vedesse an expert in this field, will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Montevideo.
The course will focus on the following subjects: “Religious pluralism in Latin America: situation and challenges”; “what is ecumenical dialogue? Fundamental notions and experiences”; “history of the ecumenical movement in Latin America: analysis starting from the teaching of Latin American Bishops”; “fundamental aspects of ecumenical activity based in the light of “Ecumenical Directory” and the Ut unum sint encyclical; “Pentecostalism in Latin America. Phenomenology, history, theology new trends. Pastoral challenges and paths for Catholic-Pentecostal dialogue” (Miguel Pastorino); “brief history of Ecumenism in Uruguay”(Julio C. Elizaga); “Challenges for ecumenism in Latin America; problems and prospects of ecumenical activity”; “ecumenical spirituality: basis of ecumenical activity” .
Participants will watch a video Ut unum sint. 40 years of ecumenism produced by the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity and a video of a conference given by President of the Pontifical Council Cardinal Walter Kasper at an ecumenical meeting in Stuttgart Germany, 8 May 2004. Two workshops will discuss ecumenical situations in the dioceses of Uruguay to identify paths for ecumenical dialogue in the realities of the local Churches.
