Gitega (Fides Service)- “In Mucunguzi as in other parishes in the archdiocese of Gitega the time has come for voluntary work” according to the diocesan Bulletin Entre - Nous. “Aware that the parish cannot afford to pay activities of Apostolate more and more lay people men, women and student boys and girls are generously offering to become part time catechists. In the last school year 2004- 2005 the parish had 31 of these volunteers.
The volunteers are trained by the parish priest and the person in change of catechesis. Courses are held once every term. It is a promising sign of hope for the future to see that most volunteer catechists are high school students already active participants in parish life, movements and apostolate. Many are members of Catholic Action, spirituality movements. Thanks to these volunteer catechists the parish is able to provide more catechism classes for school children than just 30 minutes a week.
Lay parishioners also assist the parish priest with liturgy as readers and organising choirs. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 29/9/2005 righe 21 parole 224)
