Saturday, 10 September 2005

Accra (Fides Service)- The Bishops of Ghana have asked Catholics to give generously in aid of people in the United States of America suffering the tragic consequences of Hurricane Katrina.
“The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ghana appeals to Catholics and all men and women of goodwill to contribute to special collections at Masses on Sunday 11 September or Sunday 18 September to help the victims of the devastating hurricane which struck the communities in the Gulf of Mexico region” Benedict Assorow, secretary of the Ghana Bishops’ Commission for Social Communications told CISA local news agency.
In a statement issued on 8 September signed by the vice president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ghana, Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle of Accra, the Bishops expressed “solidarity and assured prayers for the dead and their families, the homeless, the sick, the elderly and the most vulnerable people”.
The Bishops remind the nation that when the country suffered a serious food shortage in the 1980s the “generous people” of America were among the first to send aid to alleviate the suffering in Ghana.
Offerings collected by the Church in Ghana will be sent to the United States through the United States Catholic Bishops’ Conference. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/9/2005 righe 22 parole 224)
