AFRICA/ZAMBIA - Catholic Radio Mosi-o-Tunya in Livingstone diocese granted full broadcast permit

Livingstone (Fides Service) - Radio Mosi-o-Tunya, which belongs to the Catholic diocese of Livingstone in Zambia, has at last otained from the ministry of information and broadcasting services permission to resume its broadcasting. According to a statement issued by the Radio the permit which is valid for seven years is renewable every year.
Radio Mosi-o-Tunya is a church community radio and its main aim is to evangelise through participation in developmental needs of the people of Livingstone and surrounding areas.
The former minister of information and broadcasting services closed Radio Musi O Tunya in December 2004 specifically telling the radio to acquire a standby electricity generator and ensure a 24 hour police presence. The radio station was later re-opened for test broadcasts in May this year following re-inspection and certification by a combined team of Ministry for Information, Communications Authority and the Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC, see Fides 19 May 2005).
In the statement the Radio thanks the diocese of Livingstone, the Embassy of Finland and Missio Aachen, (Pontifical Mission Societies in Germany) for assisting with funds for the refurbishment, buying of equipment and improvements at the Radio station.
