ASIA/INDIA - Local Church promotes courses for secondary school students on prevention of HIV/AIDS

Patna (Fides Service) - Illness can be prevented with proper knowledge of self. With this conviction Sewa Kendra the Social Service Centre of Patna archdiocese in the north east Indian state of Bihar on the border with Nepal has launched a series of secondary school information courses on HIV/AIDS.
The six month course for secondary school students has the support of Bihar-Jharkhand group Catholic Relief Service and Bihar Society for AIDS Control.
Project Gyan involves 65 schools in three Catholic dioceses in Bihar. The programme has been proposed also to 3,000 government run schools. India’s National Aids Control Organisation with the Health Ministry and the government have provided for the formation of 6,000 teachers. A 140 page booklet with questionnaires, quizes, role games and study method has been distributed to help teachers provide pupils with adeguate information on HIV/AIDS in view of prevention.
