Tuesday, 30 August 2005

Indaiatuba (Fides Service) - “Church, people of God at the service of life” is the slogan of the 2nd National Vocations Congress in Brazil to be held 2 to 6 September in Itaici, Indaiatuba, São Paulo, on the theme “Go to work in my vineyard and I will give you the proper reward. They went” (Mt 20,4) The main purpose of the congress is to “animate and celebrate the vocational journey of the Church, people of God at the service of life”. About 400 participants are expected including 14 bishops, 172 priests, 110 religious, 100 lay people and 9 deacons.
For some years the Church in Brazil has worked to increase awareness of the common call to mission for the whole people of God through ministeries and at the service of vocation animation above with two important events: the 1st National Vocations Congress in Brazil celebrated in 1999 on the theme: “vocations and ministries for the new millennium”, and the Year of Vocations in 2003, on the theme: “Baptism, source of all vocations”. The 2nd National Vocations Congress now imminent intends to be a watershed to improve the quality of vocation pastoral and encourage a culture of vocations where vocation animation is an essential dimension of Church life. In this regard the Congress aims to increase awareness that the people of God, the assembly of those who are called (PDV 34), convoked and gathered by the Trinity (LG 4), to proclami the universal calling to holiness in the diversità of carisma and ministries (LG 5), for the formation and growth in community life and to strengthen the conviction that “Every vocation is for mission, at the service of the human person, the poor and the excluded in particular”.
In preparation for the congress parishes, dioceses and regional zones have held meetings of information and formation on the Congress theme following a working paper in three parts: Memory of the vocational progress of the Church in Brazil; “Called and invited to the vineyard of the Lord”; theological basis and pastoral indications.
