Tuesday, 26 July 2005

Rome (Fides Service) - 1200 science researchers will meet next week in Bogota to discuss the challenges facing the scientific community also in the light of the Free Trade Treaty.
The themes of the meeting will be based on the analysis of the future of the scientific community in view of a treaty between Colombia and the United States. There is growing concern about risks involved in signing a treaty of this type. First of all the experts question national competitiveness in scientific and technological sectors.
While in counries such as Spain and Japan the private sector is responsible for 75% of investment in research, in Colombia this sector concerns only 20%. It is necessary to invest more in research, consolidate education policy to stimulate cretivity and support training of researchers. (AP) (26/7/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:17; Parole:153)
