AFRICA/ZIMBABWE - Operation Restore Order: German Bishops express solidarity with the poor of Zimbabwe in a letter addressed to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Zimbawe

Friday, 22 July 2005

Harare (Fides Service) - The Catholic Bishops of Germany have written to the Bishops of Zimbabwe expressing deep concern for the plight of the people affected by the recent Operation Restore Order (see Fides May 30, 2005). The letter in English addressed to the president of the Zimbabwean Bishops’ Conference Bishop Michael Dixon Mhasera of Masvingo was signed by Cardinal Karl Lehmann, President of the German Bishops’ Conference.
“The German Bishops strongly support the demands and concerns raised in your pastoral letter ‘The Cry of the Poor’ (see Fides 21 June 2005) and join the Bihsops of Zimbabwe in condemning the massive injustice done to the poor in your country” the Cardinal wrote. “The path of violence taken by the government cannot lead to law and order in Zimbabwe. On the contrary it will cause more suffering and lead to further economic decline.
“In these days of insecurity we wish to assure you and all brothers in the episcopate of our solidarity. The Church is called to show particolar care for the poor and helpless. We share the hopes of the Holy Father that the Spirit of the Lord may guide Zimbabwe on its way to national reconciliation” the Cardinal concluded. (L.M.)
