ASIA/IRAQ - “A clear sign of civilisation” says Iraqi priest Fr Nizar Semaan commenting the nation’s 3 minutes silence to commemorate victims of terrorism

Thursday, 21 July 2005

Baghdad (Fides Service)- “A clear sign of civilisation” said Iraqi Catholic priest Fr Nizar Semaan in Mosul with regard to yesterday’s 3 minutes silence held all over the country to commemorate the victims of terrorism in Iraq.
“It was splendid gesture which honoured the thousands of innocent people killed by this blind and profoundly inhuman terrorism” said Fr Nizar.
“The gesture is important also because at the moment despite repeated attacks the people of Iraq are concerned more about the new Constitution than terrorism” the priest told Fides. “In fact the Christian Bishops of Iraq sent a message to parliament say that the new Constitution must respect all faiths and all minorities. There is concern about the proposal to make Islamic law the source of Iraqi law”.
A first draft of the Constitution was handed to President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minsiter Ibrahim Jaafari on July 19. The draft constitution must be completed by 15 August and subjected to a referendum before 15 October according to Iraq’s provisional law. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 21/7/2005 righe 19 parole 209)
