Wednesday, 20 July 2005

Rome (Fides Service) - From Africa, continually afflicted by lethal pandemics, comes good news at last. The recent outbreak of Marburg virus in which over 300 people have died may be slowing down.
The United Nations World Health Organisation representative in Angola announced that no new cases have been registered since 9 July and that the epidemic of Marburg, like the Ebola virus, would appear to be dying out. However before this statement can be confirmed all those who had contact with infected people must be tested.
Marburg virus like the Ebola virus is transmitted by saliva and other body liquids, it causes high ferver and haemorrhage and there are no vaccines or treatment to stop it. (AP) (20/7/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:15; Parole:137)
