ASIA/INDIA - Missionaries of Charity pray for the victims of the terrorist attacks on London: at the burial place of Mother Teresa Indians and visitors of all faiths pray for Londoners

Saturday, 9 July 2005

New Delhi (Fides Service) - The July 7 bomb attacks in London caused deep shock and grief among the Missionaries of Charity at the general house in Calcutta who gathered immediately to pray in silence at the tomb of Blessed Mother Teresa for the dead, the injured and the stricken families. The Sisters were joined by many local people, Christians and others.
The next morning the Sisters organised a special Mass to be offered for the victims and their families at the altar close to the tomb of Mother Teresa which has now become a place of pilgrimage for believers of all faiths. As soon as word of the Mass spread the 200 Sisters were joined by helpers and crowds of visitors and local people of different faiths anxious to pray for the victims of the London disaster.
“May the Lord give the people of London courage at this time of great trial and help them to calmly resume every day life”, said Sr Christine. “We pray God will not allow this destructive fire of terrorism to consume the world”, and she echoed the rebuke of Pope Benedict XVI who deplored such “barbaric acts against humanity”. Britain has a large community of Indian origin and many Indians have connections with the British Isles. Since the tragedy people all over India have sent messages of comfort and solidarity to the people of London. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 9/7/2005 righe 26 parole 257)
