Saturday, 9 July 2005

Seoul (Fides Service) - Believers of different faiths in Korea have united to form a Civil Alliance to protect life from natural beginning to end, protect the family and encourage couples to have more children, and to gurantee the elderly better improve living conditions. To do this the Alliance members, Catholics, Protestants and Buddhists, will promote awareness campaigns and activities, media campaigns, meetings and publications to safeguard life and the family.
The initiative was presented to the public at a recent media conference by the respective representatives: Fr. Benedict Song Young-ho for the Catholic community, Pastor Song Kil-won for Protestants and Venerable Il-gwan for Buddhists. The Alliance leaders said Korea’s social balance is threatened by a declining birth rate, hence the need for a social movement to promote fundamental values for the good of society and the nation. They noted an increasing number of divorces, lack of policies to support familes, and a widespread culture of selfishness which does not value children. To counter these tendencies the Alliance will monitor government policies, denounce abuses, propose laws, work to and form consciences, promote a culture of life and deep respect for the family.
