AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Alarm for spread of TB: 11,600 new cases every year

Tuesday, 28 June 2005

Rome (Fides Service) -In Colombia an average 11,600 new cases of TB are registered every year but it is feared that the number may rise because of co-infection with other diseases and the lack of rapid diagnosis. Tuberculosis is a transmittable disease which strikes mainly economically active people over 60.
The number of cases has increased considerably because of co-infection with HIV which continues to spread in Colombia. TB can be treated and is easy to identify with early diagnosis but unless it is identified it can be lethal. (AP) (28/6/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:11; Parole:104)
