EUROPE/SPAIN - Diocesan delegates for missions and directors of Pontifical Mission Societies discuss ‘Prospects for mission in Asia and greater attention for youth’

Thursday, 23 June 2005

Madrid (Fides Service) - A meeting in Madrid of those responsible for Spain’s missionary activity closed today. On Tuesday 21 at the invitation of the Bishops’ Commission for Missions there was a National Day for Diocesan Delegates who help Bishops with missionary animation and formation. The main theme for reflection was Prospects for mission in Asia and preparation of celebrations for the 5th centenary of the death of St Francis Xavier, patron of Missions starting on December 3.
Diocesan directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Spain are attending their annual meeting 22 and 23 June presided by the National Director Bishop Francisco Pérez. Yesterday each of the four Societies reported on the activity of the past year and plans for the future. Particularly significant will be discussion on initiatives with young people including the formation of a PMS Youth Council. Efforts to form youth in a spirit of mission is a major challenge for every diocesan PMS director. During the meeting Fr Anastasio Gil García, Vice national director will present material prepared in view of Mission Sunday this year and deliver a theological-pastoral reflection on the Pope’s Message for Mission Sunday this year (prepared by Pope John Paul II) and on all 26 of the previous messages which are a missionary legacy left by John Paul II.
