New Delhi (Fides Service) - “Indian Catholics support and proclaim the Church’s teaching on the family and family values and the sacrament of matrimony as a visible sign of unity in human society”, Fr Babu Joseph, spokesman of the Indian Bishops’ Conference told Fides. “We share the position taken by the Church to defend the sacredness of human life and the family”.
“In Indian society the family is of utmost importance and today it still has a crucial part to play in guiding the new generation of young people to build stable foundations for Indian society. The family is a value for all religions and all cultures. In fact because the Catholic Bishops’ Conference realises the importance of family values it has its own special Commission for the Laity and the Family” Fr Babu told Fides and continued: “Same sex unions are unacceptable in India, they are completely alien to our culture. On this matter Indian society is united regardless of ethnic or religious identities. All the more marriage between two people of the same sex. In fact Indians simply cannot understand why some countries in the west are starting to legalise these unions which for them are totally unacceptable”.
