ASIA/SRI LANKA - “This matter touches the very essence of family life whether Christian or not”: Catholic Church in Sri Lanka assures Spanish Catholics full support in their struggle to protect the family

Colombo (Fides Service) - The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka has voiced full support with Catholics in Spain determined to defend the family and life from dangerous legislation. A message from the local Asian Church joins a chorus of solidarity voiced already by Catholic communities in Pakistan, Mongolia and South Korea.
Archbishop Oswald Gomis of Colombo expressed solidarity on behalf of Catholics in Sri Lanka in a message sent through Fides: “We are fully behind the Bishops of Spain as they support the pro-life and pro-family demonstration in Madrid. We are united with them in this matter which is so important and undermines the very essence of the family whether Christian or not. We would point out that for Sacred Scripture homosexual acts constitute a serious perversion and represent intrinsic disorder”.
The Archbishop recalled the authentic significance of matrimony: “marriage between a man and a woman is a union of life and love established by the Creator and governed by its proper laws which finalise the marriage to procreation. Homosexual ‘marriage’ would pervert the entire structure of family life and human society of which the family is the basic nucleus”.
Voicing full support for the awareness campaign launched by the Church in Spain, the Archbishop of Colombo affirmed: “Although it is a fact that many in society have homosexual tendencies, this does not mean that we should render legal something which is totally unnatural. However far from condemning people with such tendencies, we should strive to be close to them and offer them our pastoral care and spiritual and moral help”.
