Hong Kong (Fides Service) - Communications experts in Hong Kong, Catholic and non, have urged the media to give greater attention to minority groups of foreign workers. According to the diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao the media focus mainly on episodes of conflict between foreign workers and employees. Mrs Leung, vice president of the East Asia Catholic Press Association and a university teacher said: “Today the attention given by the media to the living conditions of minority groups in Hong Kong is insufficient and focuses nearly always on negative news. Whereas the media have a serious responsibility to avoid fomenting social discrimination”.
On 5 June Hong Kong diocese celebrated its annual Communications Day with the theme this year “the media to promote national reconciliation”. The diocesan commission for labour said the media should give more space to the phenomenon of exploitation of foreign workers.
Erman Villanueva, president of United Filipinos in Hong Kong said “immigrants encounter many difficulties”.
According to official sources Hong Kong has 343,952 non Chinese immigrant residents, of these 280,000 are Asians from India, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Nepal and Pakistan.
