VATICAN - Benedict XVI comments Psalm 122: The just have entrusted their cause to the Lord and he is not indifferent to their imploring eyes, he does not ignore their invocation, or disappoint their hope

Vatican City (Fides Service) - “Jesus in the Gospel says that the eye is an expression of the profound I, it is the mirror of the soul (cfr Mt 6,22-23). Well, Psalm 122, just proclaimed, consists of an exchange of looks: the believer lifts his eyes to the Lord and waits for a divine reaction in which to find a gesture of love, a look of kindness”. With these words Pope Benedict XVI began his teaching during the general audience this morning in which he commented Psalm 122 “The people’s trust is in the Lord” vespers Monday Week 3 (reading: Ps 122,1-4).
There returns often in the psalm the image of the Most High “who looks down on mankind to see if there is one wise man: one who searches for God” the Pope said. The images of the servant and the slave “looking at their master waiting for a liberating decision”, represent “the adhesion of the poor man, the hope of the oppressed and the availability of the just man to the Lord. The Psalmist is waiting for the divine hands to move because they operate according to justice destroying evil”.
In his prayer the individual in the psalm is soon joined by the whole community: “They express the hope that the Lord’s hands will open to grant gifts of justice and freedom. Believers need God’s intervention because they are in a painful situation of scorn and ridicule by arrogant people”. The just have entrusted their cause to the Lord, “he is not indifferent to their imploring eyes, he does not ignore their invocation, or disappoint their hope”. (S.L.)
