Tuesday, 14 June 2005

Banda Aceh (Fides Service) - The living conditions of people affected by the tragic tsunami on 26 December 2005 are gradually improving thanks also to efforts of Catholic agencies and bodies. Caritas Australia, working in Meulaboh village in Sumatra, one of the worst hit areas, says the situation is slowly returning to normal. Children have gone back to school, homes, public buildings and hospitals are being rebuilt with international aid. “There is growing trust and encouragement among the people and this is very important from the psychological point of view to nourish hope and boost the local economy” Caritas Australia reports.
Catholic religious institutes are running programmes for reconstruction, rehabilitation and support for families in stricken areas and collaborating in various initiatives. For example the Opera don Orione, Claretian Fathers and Guanelliani are working together to help families rebuild homes and fishing boats in Tamil Nadu southern India and the Andamane Island.
