Kwangju (Fides Service) - “The result of Italy’s referendum on fertility treatment is valid for the whole world, also here in Korea, as a point of reference for Catholics everywhere. We are happy that the Italian law which protects human life and the rights of the unborn child will not be amended. This result is important for us too” Bishop Hyginus Kim Hee-jeong auxiliary of Kwangju, told Fides with regard to the results of the recent referendum in Italy.
“At the moment we have 15 Bishops in Kwangju taking part in a spiritual retreat and they are all delighted at the news from Italy which is bound to have a positive effect in Korea and other countries. We prayed and thanked God for this victory of life and then we also talked about the sensitive issue and the importance of protecting life” the Bishop told Fides.
Bishop Kim Hee-jeong said the famous Korean scientist Hwang, involved in experiments with human cloning, has asked to have a meeting with Archbishop Nicholas Cheong of Seuol. “This would seen to be a positive sign of hope. The fight to protect life in Korea unites Catholics, Protestants and Buddhists. Although a minority in Korea the Catholic Church has great influence on public opinion: the country is divided about whether to continue these experiments or not. The outcome of the referendum in Italy will certainly encourage pro-life activists all over the world”.
