VATICAN - Cause for beatification and canonisation of Pope John Paul II to open on June 28 in Rome’s Cathedral St John in the Lateran

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The cause for the beatification and canonisation of Pope John Paul II will officially open in the cathedral of Rome, the Basilica of St John in the Lateran on Tuesday 28 June. The news was announced by Cardinal Camillo Ruini the Pope’s vicar for the diocese of Rome on June 9 at the end of a three day Meeting of the Diocese of Rome opened by Pope Benedict XVI on June 7.
The Cardinal said: “I close with news which I am sure will be welcomed with joy. On Tuesday 28 June at 7pm here in this Basilica during the first Vespers for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul we will officially open the cause for the beatification and canonisation of Pope John Paul II. This is a great gift from the Lord and a wonderful reason to give him thanks.”
In the edict for the cause for the beatification and canonisation of the Servant of God John Paul II, dated 18 May 2005, the Cardinal Vicar said: “At the moment of his death with the impressive explosion of his fame of holiness which he already enjoyed while he was alive and with the formal request to being the Cause of Beatification and Canonisation of the Servant of God , in making it known to the Ecclesial Community we invite each and every one of the faithful to communicate with us directly or through the Diocesan Tribunal of the Vicariate of Rome (Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterano 6, 00184 Roma) any information that could be favourable or contrary to the fame of holiness of the above mentioned Servant of God”. (S.L.)
