Kong Ko Bao diocesan bulletin reported that the new church which will serve as a parish for Catholic immigrants from Korea was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop John Tong. During the solemn Mass, attended by civil authorities and diplomats, the Bishop consecrated the altar and the church and encouraged the Korean community to be frequent visitors and to participate regularly in the Eucharist in communion, unity and solidarity with the universal Church.
Bishop Tong said the church was necessary to accommodate the growing Korean Catholic community in Hong Kong. For his part the head of the Korean community thanked God and the diocese for the gift of the ‘lovely little chapel’.
There are 260 Korean Catholic families in Hong Kong all well inserted in social, cultural, economic life and in the local Church. Korean Catholics are very active in the community helping the aged and the poor with works of charity and voluntary work. Altogether there are about 6,000 Korean immigrants in the Territory and the community has its own newspaper Korean Post.
