Bangalore (Fides Service) – Shopping can also be a work of charity. Former pupils of Christ College in Bangalore, a prestigious Catholic college where many of India’s eminent personalities of the world of culture, politics, science and the professions were educated – can help disadvantaged youth contributing towards scholarships simply by using a special credit card for their purchases.
The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in collaboration with the Christ College Old Boys Association is offering the use of a special card to more than 30,000 former Christ College pupils. The card works like any other but the difference is that a good part of the fee paid for the use of the card will go to a fund in aid of scholarships for children of poor families unable to pay the expense of an education at a Catholic college.
The initiative has been welcomed from many sides, because it demonstrates the interest and solidarity of former Christ College students and involves a bank in a work of charity and a non profit venture, said headmaster Father Sebastian Thekkedath.
