Buenos Aires (Fides Service) - “Initiative culture of life against culture of death” is the slogan chosen for an International Pro-Life and Pro-Family Congress to be held 17 to 19 June at the Spanish Club in Buenos Aires. About 400 people are expected to attend. The Congress is an initiative of individual pro-life activists alarmed by the advance of homosexual and women’s lib extremism and pro-abortion front sweeping across Latin America. The organising commission comprises 40 representatives of pro-life organisations from all over Argentina and also Uruguay. The Congress has the backing of the Spanish branch of Human Life International and speakers will include members of the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Institute for Bio-ethics of Plata Catholic University, Institute of Science of the Family of Austral University, and the Chair of Constitutional Law of the Faculty of law and social sciences at the University of Buenos Aires.
The Congress aims “to respond to the urgent need to inform and form qualified people to promote the culture of life so encouraged by John Paul II and whose commitment is being carried forward with vigour and gentleness by our Holy Father Benedict XVI” Vittoria Posse, Co-ordinator of the Auditar Foundation told Fides.
The Congress programme will include conferences, discussion groups, video-debates on three main topics: Bio-medicine and new challenges arising from scientific progress; Bio-law and tension to amend, through legislation and parliamentary action, values which conform to natural order; Bio-politics: causes and affects of the offensive and strategies to neutralise them. Local, regional and international consequences.
Themes for reflection and discussion will include: globalisation and how it conditions life, the family, national sovereignty; the duty of the Catholic media to face moral relativism; deception of ‘reproductive health’; new world order; pressure on Brazil and Argentina to accept birth control methods, abortion, euthanasia and same sex ‘marriage’ ; social communications at the service of life and the family. The Congress will issue a Buenos Aires Declaration addressed to candidates in Argentina’s legislative elections in October this year. (RZ) (Agenzia Fides 24/5/2005, righe 28, parole 368)
