Lima (Fides Service) - “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of CELAM and prepare with gratitude to commemorate 400 years after his passing to the Home of the Father of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo - proclaimed patron of the Latin American Bishops by John Paul II - we stress the need to work together to find paths of conciliation and to overcome the difficulties facing our different peoples and nations”: this is part of a statement issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Peru on 17 May, the day on which the Bishops’ Conferences of Latin America were celebrating in Lima the golden wedding anniversary of CELAM and the opening of its 30th plenary assembly. The bishops of Peru also said “the political will to reinforce a culture of dialogue and the promotion of brotherhood in view of the common goal to overcome difficult situations is constituted by sister nations united in faith and the imperious need for integration”, the bishops explain. The statement ends with an invocation to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of evangelisation, that she may continue to inspire and reinforce the mission of bishops on the continent of hope. (R.Z.)
