EUROPE/SPAIN - Spanish Family Forum: There is nothing to prove that adoption by a same sex couple is innocuous for the development of the minor

Tuesday, 17 May 2005

Madrid (Fides Service) - The Spanish Family Forum, an association representing more than 4 million families in Spain, has stated that reports presented to the Spanish parliament on the consequences for minors adopted by homosexual couples not only fail to prove anything, they have been severely criticised by numerous experts.
The critics say the reports and the studies and methods with which they were compiled are of no scientific value whatsoever for the following reasons: the number of adopted children monitored is too low; the people interviewed were open supporters of homosexual parenting; the children monitored were too young, average age of 7, such studies require longer period of monitoring to be realistic. The only certain result emerging from the study was that the incidence of homosexuality is 30% higher among children parented by homosexual couples compared with children educated by a father and a mother.
Therefore there is nothing to prove that adoption by a same sex couple is innocuous for the development of the minor, on the contrary, many specialists say there exists determinant proof to show the damaged caused. “However the existing doubt is sufficient to reject this type of adoption" said Benigno Blanco, Vice president of the Spanish Family Forum.
The Spanish Family Forum is a civil association of more than 5,000 associations, 20 confederations and 117 federations representing over 4 million families. The Forum is promoting a signature collecting campaign to promote Popular Legislative Initiative for marriage to be recognised as one specific institution consisting only of a union between a man and a woman and that a child can only be adopted by two adults who are husband and wife.
