VATICAN - The Pope declares open the cause for the beatification of Pope John Paul II

Vatican City (Fides Service) - During his first audience with the clergy of Rome in St John’s Cathedral in the Lateran, Benedict XVI declared open the cause for the beatification of Pope John Paul II. Here is the text of the order issued by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints:
“At the request of Cardinal Camillo Ruini, Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome, the Supreme Pontiff BENEDICT XVI, considering the exceptional circumstances, in an audience granted to the Cardinal Vicar General on 28th day of April this year 2005, dispensed of the foreseen five year waiting period after the death of the Servant of God John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla), Supreme Pontiff, thus allowing the Cause for the Beatification and Canonisation of the same Servant of God to start immediately. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary. Given in Rome from the office of the Congregation Causes of Saints, 9th day of the month of May A.D. 2005. José Card. Saraiva Martins, Prefect.
